PRESS RELEASE
New York -- Jordan Carter and Anitra Lourie are pleased to announce The Dematerialized Auction: A Fluxus
Fundraiser for George - the story of George Maciunas and Fluxus, a conceptual auction hosted by the Emily Harvey Foundation (EHF) and conducted by Christie’s Robbie Gordy. The auction takes the form of a series of wall-projected text-based scores and instructions that seek to evoke the spirit of Fluxus while supporting the realization of Jeffrey Perkins’ film on the Fluxus founder George Maciunas.
Audience members-turned-participants are invited to bid on these Fluxus-inspired scores and instructions (i.e., “Wash your hands with air”) that have been submitted by an international array of historical Fluxus artists, interspersed with contributions by contemporary artists working across media that complement Maciunas’ Fluxus lineage.
All proceeds will go toward funding the film. Each score has a starting bid of $50, equalizing the worth of all contributions and eschewing the surplus value of the ‘art star.’ The winner of each sale will receive a Xerox of the score/instruction and a nonexclusive certificate of ownership, allowing them to realize the score in any fashion. Winners will also be listed in the credits of the film. Indeed, this is not an auction of objects or things of a traditional monetary value; the audience bids on immaterial ideas and concepts in the playful, yet productive Fluxus ethos—facilitating the completion of George and extending the reach of Fluxus to future generations.
In addition to its practical fundraising dimension, The Dematerialized Auction posits the ‘auction’ as a platform for collective participation and imagination. This auction can only exist through your imaginative (and monetary) investment. We hope that this event will open up a dialog that will extend the walls of the EHF regarding the ‘meaning’ of Fluxus in our post-digital age.
Artists featured in the live auction include: Jeffrey Perkins, Yoko Ono, Jon Hendricks, Geoffrey Hendricks, Ben Patterson, Larry Miller, Alison Knowles, Ken Friedman, Eric Anderson, Xaviera Simmons, Joao Simoes, Casey Reas, Florence Jung, Thomas Geiger, Addie Wagenknecht, Jean-Baptiste Farkas, Emma McCormick-Goodhart, Tim Simonds, Mackenzie Younger, and Julia Pelta-Feldman
The event is scheduled for January 10, 2015 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. The auction will start promptly at 7:00 p.m. Please RSVP by January 5, as seating is limited. There will, however, be ample standing room.
Kickstarter Campaign 2012
Dear Friends,
As some of you may or may not know, I am currently in the middle of making a feature length documentary portrait film about George Maciunas, the founder and impresario of Fluxus. The life and work of Maciunas exemplifies the collaborative spirit that has defined my own practice and has had great influence on generations of artists to follow.
George Maciunas (1931-1978) was a Lithuanian born artist, art-historian, graphic designer, architect, urban planner, composer and contractor. Through his tireless efforts, Maciunas has influenced and shaped the course of contemporary art. He is also known for creating the first 15 artist run co-op buildings in SoHo. This documentary film portrait will provide insight into the life of a visionary revolutionary artist.
Perfectly put in the words of Ken Friedman, “In the case of George Maciunas, he is survived by his wife; by many devoted friends; by thousands of “children” and “grandchildren” in the generations of young artists who have grown to maturity under the influence of his often anonymous but far-reaching work; by an art world which he left much different than it was when he and his colleagues first came to it.”
For the last two years I have been traveling around Europe, America and Japan, to film around 40 interviews with friends, family, scholars and professional associates of George Maciunas and Fluxus, including Jonas Mekas, Yoko Ono, Richard Foreman, Ay-O, and Jon Hendricks. I, along with the generous help of dedicated volunteers, have compiled a wide selection of photographs, articles, archival film and Fluxus work from the most important Fluxus collections in the world, including the Jean Brown Archive at The Getty Research Institute, The Sohm Archive at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, The Netherlands Fotomuseum, MoMA, and private sources.
We are now at the stage where in order to complete the film we are in much need of financial support. It is our mission to honor the legacy of George Maciunas which future generations can enjoy, learn and become inspired by. Our goal is to raise $20,000, all of which will go towards production costs: pre-editing, editing, acquisition of additional media, including still photographs and archival footage and the list goes on. As a platform to raise these costs we will go through a site called 'Kickstarter' in which we have especially created a teaser for you all to see.
Kickstarter is an all or nothing fundraiser, accessible for everyone to view and donate money if they see fit; if we reach our goal your card will be charged and you will receive your reward based upon your level of contribution. And please feel free to share this email, contribute as much or little as you are able, and help us make this film!
Thank you for your support.
